“We're back! More Melk! In case you missed last round, Melkings is the core duo of Jim Strong and Thomas DeAngelo, aided by various solicited contributions. 'Outten Inside' is the follow up to debut 'Outten O.D.'d', also on The Gift of Music, and, along with the new 'Movement Musik' on Regional Bears, serves as a self-contained trilogy (of which Association Copy's 'Schlager' could be considered a semi-related prequel). All three tapes present a distinct realization of similar sources/set up, and can be enjoyed on their own, or in sequence. With that out of the way, what does 'Outten Inside' sound like? Recitations, electronics, tapes and miscellaneous marginalia are fashioned into one stumbling suite that can't shake the specter of music no matter how hard it tries. Although there is a fair bit of tape work/studio-fuckery involved, everything is for the most part played live and deliberately arranged. There was a conscious attempt to hone in on the free wheelin' spirit of late 70s/early 80s small run sound poetry/improv. intersection (the Balsam Flex micro-label in particular), and I think we succeeded. The Bohman Brothers "Western Omelettes" single is another fine (and more affordable) reference. There are plenty of others, though that's not to say 'Outten Inside' is reducible to limp pastiche, rather, it runs the very same fool's errand of willfully obscure, culturally aloof tape music past, present and future.” - T.D.
